Fall 2004                                                                                                        Volume 1, Number 1

Strike up the band for The Music Man

For its 16th season, Bloomfield Players Community Theatre takes on one of the best-loved musicals of all time – The Music Man. Auditions for the March 2005 production will be Dec. 8 and 9. Check the BP Website, www.bloomfieldplayers.org, for time and location. Show dates are March 4-6 and 11-13 at Lahser High School . The creative team includes Rita Montpetit, director; Marty Mandelbaum, musical director; Zoe Furgison, choreographer; Kay-Ellen Murphy, executive producer.

The Music Man is often called the quintessential American musical. It is a rollicking good time with opportunities for children (at least age 8) through adults.

BP will host a class on audition techniques Nov. 1 from 7-8:30 p.m. led by performer Judy Zorn. Contact Kay-Ellen Murphy at classes@bloomfieldplayers.org for more details.

BP President’s letter

Hello Bloomfield Players supporters.  Welcome to our first newsletter!  We're looking forward to keeping everyone informed of all of BP’s activities and members’ accomplishments with this new addition to BP.

Let me take this opportunity to introduce myself and our board.  For those of you who don’t’ know me I’m Lisa Rich (often known as Marlee’s Mom). I have been a member of BP since The Sound of Music and have loved every minute of it. I was recently elected president and am looking forward to working with this wonderful organization.

Our Vice President is Kay-Ellen Murphy.  Kay-Ellen has been a part of BP since its inception.  She has been a major part of the success of BP both on and off stage. Her involvement has been invaluable to our group.

Our Treasure is Richard Gibbs (or my dancing partner).  Richard joined BP in 2000 and hasn’t missed a show since!   He remains active both on and off the stage by keeping our finances in order.

Our Secretary is Jane Dittus, one of the very talented Dittus family members that we are honored to have as part of our group.  Jane not only keeps our minutes and correspondence in order, but lends us her valuable contacts and knowledge of the theatre every step of the way.

Our Members at large are:

Anamarie Sabbagh- You may remember Anamarie looking for her niece Dorothy in the Wiz and her duckling Ugly in Honk! (It’s a good thing she doesn’t yet have children in real life- she doesn’t seem to be able to keep track of them!)   When not on stage Anamarie lends a helping hand wherever needed, including putting together our program for HONK!

Clif Furgison- Clif is returning to our Board after a short leave and we’re glad he’s back!  When not gracing our stage (Clif has been in numerous BP productions), Clif is willing to help wherever and whenever needed.  His connections and knowledge of musical theatre help us to keep focused in our endeavors.

Donna Raphael- Donna is a new Board Member who is reconnecting with BP after an educational sabbatical.  Donna is lending us her talents by putting together this newsletter and helping us with our Patron Drive .  Donna successfully ran our initial Patron Drive and   we’re looking forward to this one surpassing the first.

Kevin Merlo-Kevin has worked on many aspects of our productions, created our new website and is always there whenever and wherever he is needed.

Mark Torres - Mark is also a new Board Member, getting hooked on BP with his daughter Laura’s involvement (Lowbutt in Honk).  We’re looking forward to using Mark’s financial knowledge to keep our organization running smoothly.

Finally, I’d like to acknowledge and sincerely thank Steve Harris who has served as BP’s President since we became independent of the Recreation Department three years ago. We would never be where we are today without Steve’s dedicated efforts.

As you can see, our Board is a diverse group of individuals all working towards the goal of having a fun, cohesive community theatre group.  However, we can’t do it by ourselves so we need your participation.  If you have a special talent or just some time to give us please contact me!  The more people we have working the better our productions and the more fun for all.

If you ever have any questions or comments please feel free to email me at President@bloomfieldplayers.org.  I’m looking forward to a great year!!!    Lisa Rich

Honk! thrills audiences and cast

Our March 2004 production of Honk! was a rousing success. The amazingly talented 50-member cast was directed by Steve Krupa, Zoe Furgison and Marty Mandlebaum. Francine Grace created the wonderfully imaginative costumes and Sandi Krupa skillfully saw to all the production details. We welcomed 20 new actors and their entourages to our BP troupe, coming from as far away as Holly and Walled Lake . And, as typical with our intergenerational appeal, we had 9 different thespian families sharing the stage.

In keeping with Honk!’s theme of the beauty and acceptance of diversity, our opening night was a benefit performance for SCAMP, a summer camp program for special needs children housed in the Bloomfield Hills schools. This was the first fundraiser/benefit we have ever done, but we plan on hosting more in the future.

Due to the relative novelty of the show and the fact that most people are unfamiliar with it, several theatre groups came to see the show. One group of 30 drove all the way down from Midland to be members of our audience and emailed us later about how “enormously impressed” they were with many aspects of the performance. In all, over 1,200 people attended performances of Honk!

If you have questions or comments about Honk! contact Lisa Rich at president@bloomfieldplayers.org.
